Week of June 12th

It is hard to believe there are only two weeks left to the school year.  What a wonderful year it has been!  This class was definitely one of my favorites.  They made me smile and laugh each day.  You as parents added much to the year.  I deeply appreciate your cooperation and thoughtfulness.  An extra added positive was our wonderful 8th grade buddy class.  A special thanks to Mrs. Torres and her amazing class.  We wish the students success and happiness in high school.

This week we will be working on a Father’s Day project as well as a remembrance for our favorite buddy class. 

Religion – We will finish up chapter 23 and have our last test on Thurs.

Reading – We will celebrate Flag Day by reading “Red, White, and Blue” a story about the American Flag.  We will also read a selection about game directions for “Go Fish” and play the card game.

Grammar – W e will finish up studying adverbs and play a grammar review game – Grammar Baseball.

Math – This week we will study liquid measurement.

Spelling – This week we will work on dictionary skills.

Social Studies – We will discuss the executive and judicial branches of the government.  We will also work on a flag packet.

Science – This week we will study solids, liquids, and gases.

Cursive – This week’s letters are upper case – F, G, S, L, and P.

Enjoy these last days of second grade.  I will treasure every last minute.

Week of June 6th

It is hard to believe we only have three weeks left of this school year!  It has become a tradition for 2nd and 8th grade to celebrate the end of the year together.  On Friday, June 10th we will have a pizza lunch and a fun afternoon together.  Please check folder for more information.

Religion – This week we will work on chapter 23 “The Church Lives Today” and prepare for Pentecost Sunday.

Reading – We will work on cause and effect relationships and standardized comprehension selections.

Spelling – Lesson 35 – _er words – test on Friday.  This will be our last unit.

Grammar – We will finish up our unit on adjectives – quiz on Thursday.

Math – Chapter test on fractions and probability will be Tuesday.  We will finish up the year with measurement.  We will also work on the 8x table this week.

Social Studies – We will be studying the branches of the government.

Science – We will be discussing matter and the three stages – solids, liquids, and gases.

Cursive – This week we will be forming upper case letters – Z, X, I, J, and Q.

*** Hot days are ahead this week!  Please send your child with 2 water bottles.  I suggest wrapping one in tin foil for the afternoon.

Week of May 31st

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend.  What a great end to a fabulous week!  The children enjoyed the Book Fair and their purchases.  Our class trip to the Trevor Zoo was a great success.  Keep this location in mind when you are looking for a short day trip this summer.  Your child will be a great tour guide.  A special thanks to Mrs. Ridout for chaperoning and setting up the great Book Fair.

Our week ended with the May Crowning.  Second graders served as honor guard with their usual reverence and made the MPB family very proud.  Your children’s sincere faith serves as an example for all.  They are truly gifts from God.  A special thanks to all my helpers from grades 3 – 8.  Job well done!

Below is a list of topics to be covered during this upcoming abbreviated week.

Religion – This week we will be learning about Ascension Thursday.  Remember this is a holy day of obligation.  On Fri. we will have Mass.

Reading – We will be working on distinguishing FACT from OPINION.

Grammar – We will begin a unit on adjectives.

Spelling – I will use the short week to practice standardized test skills for spelling.

Math – This week we will work on word problems assoociated with fractions and probability.  We will also work on the 7x table.

Social Studies – We will begin a unit on the three branches of the government.

During this warm weather please send your child to school with two water bottles each day.

Week of May 23rd

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful weekend.  We definitely have a busy week ahead of us.  On Monday the children will visit the Book Fair and make their wish list.  I will do my best to guide them with their choices.  On Tuesday we will venture out on our class trip.  The children are very excited.  Please pray for good weather.  We will top off the week on Friday with our May Crowning.  Important details will go home in a note on Monday.

Religion – We will be practicing for the May Crowning and finish up chapter 19.  The chapter test will be on Thursday.

Math – We will estimate sums and differences of 3 digit numbers and work on probability.

Grammar – We will finish up the unit on contractions – quiz on Thursday.

Spelling – This week’s words are contractions.  A word list will be sent home on Monday – test on Friday.

Reading – We will work on skills needed for success on standardized tests.

Science – We will finish up our unit on plants.

Social Studies – We will celebrate Memorial Day, learning about the origin of the holiday and comparing it to Veterans Day.

Week of May 16th

I hope everyone enjoyed celebrating First Holy Communion.  It was an honor training and witnessing my wonderful class receiving their First Holy Communion.  Thank you for sharing your beautiful children with me. 

There are two more exciting events this month – our class trip on 5/24 and the May Crowning on 5/27.  Please watch folder for more information.

Progress Reports will go home this week.  Please encourage your child to continue doing their best.  Our 8th grade buddies will receive their rings at a Mass on Fri.

Reading – We will finish up skill pages for “Seed to Plant” and practice standardized test skills.

Grammar – We will begin a unit on contractions.

Spelling – Unit 5 review – test Friday.

Religion – This week we will work on chapter 19 and how to live the Eucharist.

Math – we will continue working on fractions.

Science – We fell a little behind last week, so we will disect flowers this week.

Social Studies – We will continue working on map skills.

Cursive – This week’s letters are upper case E,N,M and a  review.

Week of May 9th

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day.

The big event has finally arrived, First Holy Communion.  The children are very busy practicing.  Their excitement and reverence for the sacrament is inspiring.                                                                                                                                                 ** Reminder:  There are two practices this week – Thurs., May 12th at 3:45 and Fri., May 13th at 6:00.  Both practices are at MP Church.  It is necessary for your child to make both sessions.                                                                                  We will celebrate with our 8th grade buddies on Fri. with a Confirmation/Communion breakfast.  Watch folder for more information.

Religion – We will finish up chapter 18 “Liturgy of the Eucharist” this week.  Test will be on Thurs.

Reading/Science – Both subjects will be combined this week.  We will read a story “From Seed to Plant” and work on fun activities such as, disecting a flower.

Spelling – this week’s words are the months of the year and their abbreviations.  Test will be on Friday.

Grammar – This week we will work on Possessive Pronouns.

Math – We will begin the chapter on Fractions.

Social Studies – This week we will be working on map skills – finding coordinates on a grid.

We will also start upper case cursive letters.  The children are so excited and proud of themselves.

Week of May 2nd

I can’t believe we are in the month of May!  This school year has just flown past.  I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Easter vacation, I know I did.  The best part of second grade is less than two weeks away – First Holy Communion!  Please watch your child’s take home folder for important letters.

Our conferences afforded me an enjoyable opportunity to meet with you.  As a group you have been so cooperative and easy to work with.  Teamwork has been our motto and the children have reaped the benefits.

This week is packed with many special things.                                                               Religion – On Monday we will celebrate the Beatification of Pope John Paul II.  We will be studying the Liturgy of the Eucharist and practicing for First Holy Communion, including tasting an unconsecrated host.

Reading – Each week we will practice a standardized reading test selection to keep skills sharp and see how much we’ve grown.  We will also read  stories about Earth Day and Cinco de Mayo.

Grammar – We will continue working on pronouns.

Spelling – This week’s word list  consists of the days of the week and their abbreviations – test Friday.

Math – We will finish up our unit on geometry – test on Friday.  We will also review multiplication facts 2 – 5.

Science – We will be working on the missed celebration of Earth Day.  Each child will receive a newspaper with great facts and activities concerning Earth Day.

Social Studies – This week we will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with many facts and fun activities.

Cursive – We will finish up learning how to write lower case letters.

We will also be working on secret Mother’s Day surprises.
